Pandora's Box of Mystery
Greek Goddess Pandora |
Zeus decided to punish humanity after receiving an oracle from Prometheus, indicating that a child of his, born of Thetis would outpower him and usurp his throne. He told Hephaestus, the Greek deity of blacksmiths, crafters, artisans, and volcanoes, to make a lady out of clay and give her a human voice, among other things. Hephaestus put in a lot of effort and produced a masterpiece. This clay creature appealed to Goddess Athena, who breathed life into her and taught her how to weave and dress. She was created beautifully by Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Hermes taught her how to lie and seduce others. When Zeus saw her, he was pleased, and he named her Pandora and gave her to Epimetheus as a present.
Despite his brother, Prometheus, warning him not to take gifts from Zeus because there would always be a trap, Epimetheus disobeyed his brother's advice and fell in love with Pandora, marrying her. Zeus gave Pandora a magnificent box as a wedding present on the condition that she never opens it.
Epimetheus and Pandora were in a good mood for a while. As time went on, Pandora, on the other hand, grew increasingly intrigued about what was in the box. She couldn't understand why someone would send her a package if she couldn't see what was inside, so she decided to open it one day, overcome by her curiosity. She took the key, inserted it into the lock, turned it around, and carefully lifted the lid to inspect it.
The room had filled with dreadful things before she realized what had happened: illness, despair, evil, greed, aging, death, hatred, violence, cruelty, and war. She slammed the lid shut, terrified, leaving only the spirit of 'hope' inside.
Pandora's Box |
The tale of Pandora's Box is told in numerous versions, the most popular of which are those by Hesiod, Aesopus, and Aeschylus. According to one of the oldest variations, Zeus had filled the box with actual goods and told Pandora not to open it. Pandora, curious as she was, disobeyed Zeus and opened the box, causing all of the good it held, all of the things Zeus had given to the people, to go back to heaven, except for Hope. Despite its various variations, it is unclear whether Zeus intended to punish humanity with the contents of Pandora's box or with the lady herself, with many connecting Pandora's box to Eve's apple.
